Policy and global cues (on/before 7 Sep 2026)
No new BNM move — last decision was the 3 September hold at 2.75%.
The global overlay was the US August payrolls print from Friday: +162,000 vs ~55,000 expected, unemployment 4.1%. That lifted Fed hike odds into the 15–16 September FOMC (markets were pricing a decent chance of a 25 bp move). US 10-year yields sat near 4.78%. The ringgit eased a touch to about 4.0440/0485. Brent was near US$97 on US–Iran shipping tensions. US CPI was due later in the week.
Analysts said local stocks were less sensitive to the US-rate scare than the yield move implied, with buyers rotating into earnings-backed banks, utilities and telcos. Expected range for the week: 1,700–1,730.
Other news
- Mild reported foreign inflow on the day amid still-heavy month-to-date selling.
- Political chatter on election timing stayed in the background; not a tape driver.
- Construction was soft on the day even as Gamuda’s earlier data-centre wins remained a medium-term support.
Read-through
A heavyweight-led bounce after Friday’s profit-taking. Breadth stayed negative, so it was not a broad risk-on day. PetGas and MPI led; Nestlé slipped again.
Support: 1,708–1,700. Resistance: 1,715–1,730.
